Create a maximalist interior in 2022 with Emma Britton
Bold dark colour and pattern are a key trend in 2022, so create a maximalist interior today! Putting bold pattern on rich and dark grounds and layering up different patterns on interior surfaces is showing up in interiors. Think heritage aesthetics mixed with bold pinks and yellowy mustard colour pops. A contemporary take on chintz.
Here are 5 ways to create a maximalist interior with Emma Britton Decorative Glass Designer:
1. A dark background can show off a patterned design really well. Rain Garden is the design shown here with a Dulux’s Woodland Fern green backdrop. The combination makes the colourful design pop, which is accented with a William Holland copper bath adding both luxury and period style.
2.Putting a bold pattern on a deep colour has the effect of grounding it. Take Emma’s lastest splashback design, ‘Bright Lights’ on a cobalt background. The hand painted rhubarb and mustard colours sing against the blue. Warm colours over cooler tones, very maximalist!

4. This amazing bespoke commission Emma recently completed in London shows you just how bold you can go with your splashback. Rainforest botanicals from Singapore steal the show in this kitchen. It’s a bold statement that certainly looks amazing at over three and half meters long. The simple contemporary cabinetry is the perfect back drop for a little bit of tropical flair and just a pop of maximalism in Putney.
Emma has just designed me an amazing bespoke splashback. From the original zoom consultation to the numerous updates and decisions regarding artwork, colours etc, it has been an easy and enjoyable experience. The splashback is exactly what I wanted and everyone who has seen it comments on how amazing it is.
5. If you are wondering how to mix pattern successfully for a maximalist look…
‘The key to layering pattern and do cool clashing is to make sure you have a commonality between the patterns. For example a cohesive palette across different patterns on different material surfaces will make sure it sits together, wallpaper, curtains, cushions, flooring, splashbacks. Scale is important too, firstly try to find scales that sit together. A good example is ‘ditsy’. A ditsy print is a small scale floral print, for example think traditional Laura Ashley or Liberty. Mixing ditsy’s together can work really nicely. In tableware these smaller designs also work really nicely. You might have a Laura Ashley table cloth, paired with vintage Liberty napkins and Emma’s Floral glassware.
