A Milestone in My Glass Journey
There are moments in a career that make you stop and reflect, and being invited to attend the Court and Livery Dinner of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, Vintners Hall, in the City of London, is certainly one of them.
After 18 years working as a decorative glass designer, receiving this invitation felt like both an honour and a milestone, especially as my journey started out in textiles. What began as a necessary change in direction into the glass industry during the recession years when I graduated has now become my life’s work.
The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers
The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London, receiving its incorporated Charter in 1664 and originally established to regulate the sale and quality of glass within the City. The Company has evolved into a modern charitable organisation dedicated to supporting education, craftsmanship, heritage and the future of the glass industry. While preserving centuries-old traditions, it actively promotes excellence, innovation and the development of new talent through scholarships, awards and educational initiatives.
Ethos
The Company’s values are as relevant today as they were over 350 years ago: celebrating skill, encouraging learning and fostering a community of people committed to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Glass remains a fascinating material that brings together science, art and technical expertise in equal measure. It continues to inspire those fortunate enough to work with it like myself, and those who enjoy, benefit and collect the products we create.
Craftsmanship Matters
The welcome into this distinguished gathering was a real moment in the history of Emma Britton Decorative Glass Designer and the hours I’ve spent in my studio. It is a reminder that craftsmanship matters, traditions can embrace innovation, and that dedication to something you are passionate about is worth pursuing. Carving out a name for myself as a woman in the decorative glass industry, bringing together artisan techniques with modern production, is really an achievement I’m so proud of.
Reflection
The evening spent showcasing my work to interested members of the Company, whilst also celebrating the remarkable history and vibrant future of the British glass community is one that will live long in my memory. Not to mention the wonderful hospitality and time honoured rituals it was a privilege to take part in. Without a doubt a career highlight.
