Emma's Style: Creating a Contemporary Kitchen with Fern Splashbacks

8th September 2025

Emma Britton’s Fern splashback designs are popular choices for a sophisticated and contemporary kitchen splashback. Available in two beautiful colourways (Sunlight Fern and Moonlight Fern), these woodland inspired splashbacks each offer a completely different look for your home. In this journal post, Emma talks through how she would style a kitchen to best celebrate each of these contemporary splashback designs.

Both designed for and debuted at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, Emma chose the Sunlight Fern variation to spotlight at the show. Elegant and soft, this warming pattern offers a timeless and naturalistic look ideal for contemporary kitchens. On the other hand, its sister design, Moonlight Fern, is a striking and enchanting statement splashback. We hope you find the below inspiring for creating a contemporary kitchen look with these two beautiful glass splashback designs.

Sunlight Fern: a Natural Splashback Look

Gentle and warm, Sunlight Fern sits best in kitchens that share its tonality. Neutral coloured walls will elevate this splashback and allow it to ‘breathe’ into the surrounding space. Farrow & Balls’s Skimming Stone or Scallop both are lovely paint choices for a warm, plaster-toned wall colour. On the other hand, a fresh mint colour would work well for a lighter, fresher space.

Emma loves a statement stove, so pairing Sunlight Fern with a cream or sage range cooker will give the look of quiet luxury. For worktops, consider wood or a pale marble. Natural materials really add to the calming ambience this hand-painted splashback design creates.

Bespoke plywood cabinetry is a cool, contemporary choice for this botanical splashback, although a modern shaker-style kitchen would be a timeless choice too.

Moonlight Fern: Bold Styling with a Contemporary Kitchen Splashback

On the other hand, use Moonlight Fern to create a real focal point in your kitchen. A rich colour pallet will tie in beautifully with this striking floral splashback. Whether that’s through wall colour, cabinetry, appliances or accessories. Think warm golds and apricot colours, alongside inky blues and greens. Pair with metallic hardware for a luxurious kitchen look, like the modern copper tap below.

Moonlight Fern really pops when used against a lighter wall and alongside a coloured range cooker, to create a kitchen unit with impact. Being a hand-painted splashback design, there are lots of different colours to pick out and accentuate in your interior. Everhot’s Marine Blue or Forest Green range cookers are both great choices for bringing out the midnight tones of this statement splashback. Lots of my customers choose Everhot Cookers for a range of my designs, get inspired here.

Despite what the name suggests, don’t be afraid that this deep coloured splashback will make your room dark! It’s a really sophisticated Splashback with an almost luminescent look. It makes a real impact in colourful, maximalist kitchens, but looks equally striking in a different way with more toned down, warm schemes. Emma
