Floral Door Commission for Urban Front: A Festival of Foxgloves, Delphiniums And More
As a designer, every so often it’s great to challenge the normal way in which you create. On this occasion it was taking on a beautiful floral door commission for Urban Front. The brief was to spend just one day creating something imaginative – which isn’t long – as part of their artist and designer door series of showroom installations and short films. Each one demonstrates the potential of Urban Front doors and creativity. They are all so different, so enjoy taking a look at the others too. Watch me painting my door here.
In terms of size, the Urban Front Door on which I worked was similar dimensions to some of my bigger glass splashback commissions. These would be large kitchen worktop splashbacks and bathroom panels that always take me days to paint and refine. However, I really had to loosen my design style and work much more quickly than I would normally for this door commission.
Founded in 2005 by the Assafs, Urban Front is now celebrating 21 years of beautiful, bespoke, high-security doors handcrafted in the UK by a small team of skilled artisans.
Signature Floral Style for Urban Front
I conjured up a design evocative of English gardens, meadows, and hedgerows, on a versatile, pale green, painted door. My design aesthetic is inspired by British Suburbia and garden flowers so a front door commission felt very aligned. The door height enabled me to lean into depicting the flowers I most love to work with – those with architectural qualities, interesting petal shapes and imposing structures. Foxgloves, delphiniums, alliums and agapanthus all feature on this commissioned Urban Front Door design and in my own splashback and glassware collections.
“Emma’s garden door for Urban Front is the second in a series of commissions. Our intention is to create a sense of the limitless unique possibilities and to show that doors should be considered as part of interior design choices. Emma’s work looks beautiful and is a lovely way of bringing the outdoors in”.

Marvellous New Materials
Bespoke paints for decorating the Urban Front Door behaved differently to my normal palette. They offered up an opportunity to try fresh shades, and explore their application. As you know, I’m inspired by natures often unexpected colour palette – working with new materials had the feeling of being similarly intuitive.

Commission Reflections
Bringing my signature aesthetic to life for Urban Front has been creatively exciting. It shows the versatility of my floral design style, even working at great speed. From glass splashbacks to external and internal doors, giving functional products a twist with my aesthetic is always rewarding.
