Can You Put an Upstand and Splashback Together?

8th May 2026

It’s a common question as to whether an upstand and splashback can be used together. In short, yes, though there’s lots of things to consider. From aesthetics to functionality, materials and design, to how the space itself is used. Emma explains the different ways you can successfully use upstands and splashbacks together in this journal post, plus answers some helpful upstand FAQs.

What’s the difference between upstands and splashbacks?

Upstands are a small extension at the back of a worktop that goes up the wall. They’re usually the same material as the worktop, although can be made of a contrasting material like tile or glass too. At only around 100mm in height, upstands are more of a decorative feature as they don’t offer as much wall protection as a splashback might. In some areas of your kitchen, an upstand alone may give you enough wall protection and visual interest. Though in others, such as behind a cooker or sink, a splashback is a more practical choice.

Do you put a splashback on top of an upstand?

When considering splashbacks and upstands in your new kitchen, think about both where you want wall protection, and what will look best. Emma Britton splashbacks work both with and without up stands. If you have pre-existing upstands in your kitchen, then an Emma Britton splashback can be fitted above them and look fantastic. Equally, if you’re designing a new kitchen, you may decide to have a gap in your upstands to allow your splashback to sit against the worktop. Or, perhaps you have no upstands at all! Emma is always happy to advise on what size or design of splashback will work best for your space and needs, offering over 15 years of experience in made to measure glass splashbacks.

Splashbacks on top of Upstands

The following splashbacks are fitted on top of upstands. Take the upstand material into consideration when choosing your decorative splashback design, to ensure they visually harmonise together.

The warm colours in this splashback design really draw the eye from the wooden upstand, making a feature of both surfaces for this striking Everhot splashback.

Adding a made to measure splashback on top on an upstand gives this sink area much more practicality. Moonlight Fern design adds sophisticated interest with its all over pattern too.

Splashbacks between Upstands

A considered choice for creating a focal point of a cooker splashback. Request gaps in your upstands when designing your kitchen so your splashback can fit in-between, to create a feature area.

Emma’s Geo glass splashback creates the look of tiles in this modern country kitchen. A really effective choice for creating a subtle statement with the white Everhot cooker. White upstands on the other worktops add a finished detail elsewhere.

Splashbacks without Upstands

Conversely, if you don’t have upstands at all, you’ll benefit from having only one seamless wall surface with a glass splashback. This is the easiest to clean option too, as there will be no join between the upstand and splashback.

This bespoke splashback without upstands finishes off this kitchen area perfectly. Floral splashbacks in particular often look better rooted from the worktop rather than the top of the upstand. This gives the flower stems a more integrated look, as though they are growing from your kitchen!

Textured metallic splashbacks are a great example of splashbacks that work aesthetically both with and without an upstand. Shaped to go behind the cooker and above the worktop upstands for a practical, yet completely stunning finish.

Do you need an upstand with a splashback?

All in all, there is no right or wrong way to have upstands and splashbacks. Upstands are a very common detail in modern kitchen design, though you don’t have to have them. On the other hand, if you do have upstands, they can be coordinated beautifully with a glass splashback from Emma Britton.
