5 Ideas for an Abundance of Sweetpeas

30th June 2025

Sweetpeas are one of Emma’s favourite flowers to both grow and paint, and feature in her popular ‘Sweetpea’ floral splashback. They are delicate and enchanting, a real English flower garden favourite. If you’ve grown sweetpeas yourself, you’ll know just how joyfully abundant they are in early summer. Here, we’ve ‘picked’ some creative ideas for different things to do with an abundance sweetpeas – besides just popping them in jars!

Tip: One of the things that’s really great about sweetpeas is the more you cut, the more flowers will grow. You can quickly end up with a hoard of flowers that are ready for cutting, so it’s nice to have some different inspiration of how you can make the most of them while they’re in season.

Creative Ideas for what to do with Sweetpeas

  1. Emma loves to use different shaped and sized glassware to arrange her sweetpeas at home.  Much prettier than just a jar. Little tumblers work for shorter stems, whereas a taller glass is better for leggy ones. The new Floral Twist Bud Vase is the perfect shape for small posies like this.
  2. Cut some sweetpeas with their really long, central stems attached to add some interesting textural foliage to cut flower bouquets. Then combine with other garden flowers or grasses for a homemade hand-tied arrangement. This would make a beautiful gift for a summer birthday, alongside an Emma Britton decorative carafe – the narrow neck supports delicate flowers really well. Gift wrapping expert Jane Means showed us how to beautifully wrap a Carafe with dried flowers, but a bunch of summer garden blooms works equally as well.
  3. If you’re hosting a summer soiree, add sweetpeas to your tablescape for some floral flair. Tie your napkins with some pretty twine and slide in a single sweetpea stem to elevate place settings. Sweetpeas aren’t edible so avoid putting them around food, but you could scatter loose petals along the centre of the table to add a splash of colour.
  4. Preserving flowers is a nice way to enjoy a hint of summer long after the seasons change. Although sweetpeas don’t dry too well, their delicate tendrils are perfect for pressing. Sandwich freshly picked stems between pages of a heavy book (or use a flower press if you have one), and leave for several weeks. When they’re fully dried out, enjoy a mindful moment creating little arrangements and pictures. Why not look at Emma’s floral repeat patterns as inspiration? Do try with other flowers too, a nice way to take a snapshot of your garden at the height of summer.

5. Finally, a thrifty tip is to to purposely leave a couple of flowers to go to seed. Pick the pods when they’ve dried out, remove the seeds and dry ready for sewing next year. This is a nice sustainable way to keep your flower garden going too!
